The Mussey Township woman who killed her friend-turned-romantic rival early this past summer was sentenced last Monday to serve three to 15 years in prison.

44-year-old Raquelle Casillas pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in early September, with prosecutors dropping the original charge of open murder. Her September plea and October sentencing, the latter which occurred over Zoom, ends an almost four month journey for justice that began Tuesday, June 6, in Capac.

On that day, shortly before 4:00 a.m. St. Clair County Sheriff deputies were called to a South Main Street home in the Village of Capac following a call from a 44-year-old man living at the residence. He reported a fight had occurred earlier in the evening between Casillas and a 44-year-old Almont woman.

Following the fight, the man found the Almont woman unconscious and was unable to wake her. Casillas was still at the home when deputies arrived, later being taken into custody that same day and deputies learning that the women had been reportedly arguing on and off for days over a shared relationship with the man.

The Almont woman was transported to McLaren Lapeer, later dying Thursday, June 8.

In addition to the sentenced time, Casillas was ordered to pay almost $500 in court costs and related fees.
