Sanilac County increases pay for sheriff’s office positions, attorneys, some elected positions

With pay becoming more competitive while changes and challenges increase in the law enforcement profession, the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office will see their staff members’ pay scales adjusted in the new year.
In a November memo to the county board of commissioners, Sanilac County Administrator/Controller Nathan Roskey noted that, in order to address short staffing and fierce competition among law enforcement agencies, an adjustment to the seven-step pay scale was necessary.
Further calculations found that applying a 2.25% growth multiplier to all positions on the pay scale would increase the overall salary growth by a rate of 13%. The proposed increase would be one that the county budget could handle, with all of the modifications costing the budget a little under $162,000.
With a memorandum of understanding signed by commissioners at their December 5th meeting, it is unclear if any immediate change will be seen for employee retention at county agencies. The commissioners also approved pay increases for county attorneys and some elected positions, such as county treasurer, register of deeds, clerk and drain commissioner.
