The City of Lapeer’s Fire and Rescue Department responded yesterday evening to two separate structure fires, with no injuries reported.
Crews were dispatched just before 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 22, after a passerby reported smoke coming from an attached garage in the 1200 block of Sharon Drive in Lapeer Township. Within three minutes, crews were on the scene and putting out the blaze, containing it to the home’s garage.
No injuries were reported, with the fire’s origin and cause still under investigation. Elba Township Fire and Rescue, as well Lapeer City Police, assisted at the scene.
Within a half hour of clearing the first scene, fire crews were dispatched again, this time at 8:45 p.m., to a barn fire in the 1400 block of Haines Road in Mayfield Township. Upon arrival five minutes later, crews found a fully involved 30×40 pole barn fire. Due to the roof collapsing early and the closest hydrant to the fire being about two miles away, putting out the blaze was a challenge for responding crews.
In putting out the blaze, Lapeer Fire and Rescue was crucially assisted by the Arcadia Township Fire Department and Deerfield Township’s Fire and Rescue. The origin and cause of this fire is also under investigation.
The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office and Lapeer County EMS assisted at both scenes, with Lapeer Fire and Rescue also expressing gratitude to Lapeer County Central Dispatch for assistance on both calls.
