Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that two Thumb-area towns were among the 17 recipients of road funding grants totaling $3.1 million, awarded through the Community Service Infrastructure Fund (CSIF) Category B program.

Established by the state Legislature in 2018, the CSIF is administered by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and serves as a stop-gap program to help fund road projects in small communities with populations less than 10,000.

Successful projects were selected, in part, because they are paired with planned infrastructure work, coordinated with other road agencies, focused on extending the useful life of the road, and had limited funding sources for road improvements.

Grant awards range from $97,000 to $250,000 for road resurfacing, culvert replacement, pavement crack sealing, and other preservative measures.

The village of Clifford in Lapeer County received a grant of $150,000 for work on their Main Street while St. Clair County’s city of Yale received $186,000 for work on Mechanic Street.

They received the maximum amount the grant could provide, with the state matching up to 50% of the projects’ funds.
