Vassar police officer on way to Wednesday accident scene is minorly injured in car collision

Michigan State Police Troopers from the Caro Post were busy yesterday, responding to three separate crashes, including one involving a Vassar Police vehicle.

Troopers were first dispatched to W Saginaw and Van Buren Roads in Denmark Township  around 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, for a two car injury crash. Investigation found that one of the cars had been traveling south on Van Buren when it ran the stop sign at the intersection of Van Buren and West Saginaw Roads and struck a dump truck. The dump truck was loaded with stone and heading east on West Saginaw Road when the collision occurred.

Both occupants of the passenger vehicle sustained minor injuries and were transported to a Flint hospital for treatment, with no other injuries reported. Troopers were assisted at the scene by Richville Fire Department, Reese and Vassar Police Departments and MMR.

As troopers dealt with the Denmark Township incident, another accident occurred, with an on-duty Vassar police officer involved. The accident happened at the intersection of West Saginaw and Sheridan Roads in Vassar Township, with troopers dispatched in response around 3:10 p.m. Preliminary investigation found that an officer from Vassar Police Department, whose patrol car’s lights and sirens were activated as they rushed to the Denmark Township accident, had been traveling behind a 48-year-old Clio woman at the time of the accident, both vehicles heading west on West Saginaw Road.

The Clio woman slowed her car before abruptly attempting to turn south onto Sheridan Road in front of the patrol car. The resulting collision saw both parties minorly injured but no medical attention, as both refused treatment at the scene. The woman was cited for failing to yield for an emergency vehicle.  Troopers were assisted at this scene by Vassar Fire, Vassar PD, the Tuscola Sheriff’s Department, and Mayville Ambulance.

Troopers finished off the eventful day with a two car injury crash at Brown and Oak Roads in Vassar Township, being dispatched shortly after 5:00 p.m.  Preliminary investigation indicates a 69-year-old woman from Vassar was traveling east on Brown Road with a 69-year-old female passenger from Millington, while the second car was driven south on Oak Road by a 69-year-old woman from Otter Lake.

The first car failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection, striking the second car in the driver’s door.  All three subjects were transported by MMR to Saginaw hospitals for medical treatment.  Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.  Troopers were assisted on scene by Millington-Arbela Fire, MMR and the Tuscola Sheriff’s Department.
