A police officer and her son are facing charges for a July 2023 traffic crash in Lapeer County’s Dryden Township, with the mother being arraigned yesterday.
The case was referred from the Lapeer County Prosecutors’ Office to the Macomb County Prosecutors’ Office per the normal conflict of interest process. According to prosecutors, the accident occurred on Sunday, July 2, 2023, when an Amazon driver failed to yield to a 15-year-old boy driving a GMC Acadia, and received life-threatening injuries from the crash.
Despite it being the scene of an accident, the 15-year-old left, with a neighbor who heard the crash coming to the Amazon employee’s aid.
A little while after the accident, the boy’s mother and off-duty Almont Police Officer, Amanda Szymanski, arrived at the scene of the crash, telling investigators that she was in the car with her son at the time of the accident. However, following more investigation, the 45-year-old mother from Dryden was charged with Lying to a Police Officer during the investigation of a four-year-felony, which is a two year high court misdemeanor.
The now 16-year-old juvenile was charged with Failure to Stop at the Scene of the Accident Resulting in Serious Impairment or Death, a five year felony.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office will be handling this case, with Amanda Szymanski arraigned yesterday in 71A Lapeer District Court and given a $5,000 personal bond. A Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for Friday, July 19, 2024 at 9 am.
