A Macomb County man was sentenced this Monday, July 29, in Lapeer County’s 40th District Court on one count of reckless driving and one count of reckless driving causing injury.
Mark Wayne Geodge III was 17 years old when he caused a three-vehicle collision on M-53, near the Borland Road intersection, in January 2023. The accident killed one instantly, and injured a total of seven people from the three vehicles, including two pregnant women and an infant.
Goedge was sentenced five to 15 years on the first count, and two to five years on the second count.
Imlay City Police Chief Brett Selby notes in a press release that M-53 from Newark Road to Second Street in Imlay City remains a dangerous stretch of road. The Police Department, City Officials and MDOT are working to fast track a solution which is long overdue. Traffic safety measures have increased this year on that same stretch of road that include patrol visibility, continued speed radar enforcement and placement of a speed trailer sign near Kroger.
The chief also reminds drivers to be patient when exiting any of the businesses on M-53 (Cedar). One of the most difficult things for drivers to recognize and gauge is the speed of a vehicle coming directly towards you in relation to the speed limit.
