Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office warning against recent phone scam impersonating retired sergeant

The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office would like to alert the public that scammers have once again cloned their phone number, and are impersonating a retired sergeant.
Issuing the warning earlier this week, the office shared that the caller will pretend to either be a current deputy or Sergeant Craig Miller, who retired in 2021 after 42 years in law enforcement, before demanding payment for supposed warrants. The scammers may also ask you to call a 313 number back to set up payment.
The sheriff’s office wants to be clear that this is a scam, as the office, or any law enforcement office for that matter, will never solicit payments or threaten arrest over money via phone call.
The office encourages the public to inform friends and family who may miss this announcement, and adds that, should you remain uncertain about a call’s authenticity, to verify the call by contacting the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office at 810-664-1801.
