Two people escaped injury after their boat took on water during a duck hunting trip in Huron County.

Huron County Central Dispatch received a call around 10 a.m. Thursday, November 14, from a duck hunter asking for help after he and a companion had swamped their boat. According to Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson, the boat had taken several waves over its bow, submerging the boat partially in McKinley Township’s Wild Fowl Bay.

Both people had life jackets, with one staying with the boat while the other attempted to get back to shore.

Fairhaven Township Fire Department was dispatched to their location, about two miles offshore, northwest of Bay Port. Also dispatched to the scene were county sheriff deputies and Caseville Fire, with both agencies bringing their rescue boats. However, before they arrived with the equipment, Fairhaven firefighters were able to procure a private boat, quickly retrieving the two duck hunters from the mid-40 degree water and bringing them to shore for a check over by Scheurer Ambulance.

However, both the 64-year-old boat owner and his 31-year-old passenger both refused further treatment. Emergency responders were clear of the scene after about 90 minutes.
