Small Michigan community could reopen police department

(MEMPHIS) — A small southeastern Michigan community could reopen its troubled police department after temporarily shutting down earlier this year. The Memphis City Council on Tuesday voted to hire Stanley Muszynski, a retired Shelby Township Police Department lieutenant. Mayor Eric Schneider says the new chief will get time to review the situation before reinstating the department, which includes eight part-time officers. Kevin Sommers, the chief for the small city bordering St. Clair and Macomb counties, died Jan. 1 of complications from a surgery. He had been hired to deal with long-standing issues at the department, including missing firearms, police radios and evidence. Also, an investigation by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department that was done at Sommers’ request alleged two officers falsified a police report.
