New TV segments tell of fateful twists that changed history

BOSTON (AP) – A new series airing on the History Channel focuses on some small but decisive twists of fate that changed the course of human affairs. “Crossroads of History” chronicles the little-known back stories that played out behind some of the most significant developments in world history. The segments air Thursdays at 11:30 p.m. EDT as part of History’s “Night Class.” Creator Elizabeth Shapiro, who grew up in Chelsea, Massachusetts, says the idea stemmed from a skit she wrote about young Adolf Hitler’s rejections from art school. Shapiro says there’s no shortage of such moments. One episode recounts how President Lincoln was assassinated after his bodyguard ducked out of the theater to get a drink at a bar across the street. “Crossroads of History” runs through June.
