(BATTLE CREEK) — Improvements continue on southern Michigan train tracks that will change service along the route. Amtrak and the Michigan Department of Transportation announced Monday that work has begun between Battle Creek and Jackson that includes grade crossing, track and signal upgrades. That’s leading to temporarily shortened or suspended routes for Amtrak Wolverine Service trains as part of the Accelerated Rail Program. MDOT spokesman Michael Frezell says trains will run unimpeded between Chicago and Pontiac on Sundays, a heavy travel day. But restrictions in the affected area on other days allow “for a longer work period for crews.” The modified service schedule runs through September 23. The Blue Water and Pere Marquette services aren’t affected. The project aims to boost ride reliability and comfort and expand the Midwest’s first 110-mph Amtrak service.
