U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin was in Port Huron earlier this week, meeting with area officials and local business leaders to discuss a broad range of topics.
Senator Slotkin’s appearance at the St. Clair County administration building Monday was part of a statewide tour of communities along Michigan’s borders. She said the visits are an opportunity for her to speak with local officials and see for herself how trade tensions and tariffs recently enacted with Canada are impacting business and tourism in the state’s border communities.
Slotkin expressed concern that a decline in border crossings into Port Huron and a drop in tourism could translate to a negative impact for the local economy.
In fact, data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection shows that passenger vehicle border crossings into the U.S. at the Blue Water Bridge were down by over forty percent in March of 2025 compared to March of 2024. That translates to a loss in tourism revenue for the region, Slotkin says.
