PLYMOUTH, MI — Hundreds of worshippers at a church outside of Detroit have paid their respects to an 11-year-old saint who’s considered a model of mercy.
Each worshipper had 15 seconds to view the relics of St. Maria Goretti and pray before her wax likeness on Thursday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Plymouth. The Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/1L36Zzi ) reports that the visit was the first of three stops the relics are making in Michigan as part of nationwide tour for a Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis.
Goretti managed to forgive her attacker before she died of stab wounds in 1902.
Father Bryan Shackett says her story is an example of the “humble forgiveness” that everyone should strive for.
