CHARLOTTE, Mich. (AP) – Charlotte residents are pushing for officials to fix a road crossing they say is dangerous and sometimes impassable due to flooding. The Lansing State Journal reports that Five Point Highway crosses a drain that empties into the Battle Creek River, and is sometimes flooded due to heavy rainfall. Locals call the vegetation, muck and water surrounding the crossing the swamp. Blake Mulder, chair of the Board of Commissioners, said the flooding is a “decades-old problem.” A proposed temporary solution would involve the placement of two culverts on top of another culvert under the road to help more water drain from the area. Blair Ballou, engineer-manager of the Eaton County Road Commission, says a long-term plan would involve removing part of the roadway and replacing it with a lighter weight material.
