Voyageurs, Settlers & Natives FREE Weekend at the Museum

Visit the Sanilac County Historic Village & Museum for this FREE family-friendly event, as they welcome back the Lac Ste. Clair Voyageurs for a living history encampment.

Learn about the experience the rich history connected with the voyageurs, early settlers, American Indians, and Military of the Great Lakes Fur Trade period, spanning the years from 1750-1840.  This reenactment of the lifestyles and skills of the era will include demonstrations and displays of traditional crafts and skills, trade goods and artifacts, campfire cooking, military life, weaponry, and much more.

Meet the settlers at the Banner Cabin would of been the first permanent white residents of Sanilac.  Check out the Native American collection in the Houndtown cabin, that was assembled with help of local Native Americans.  Visit the blacksmith shop to watch the blacksmith at work.  Explore the historic village, where most buildings will be open with docents from noon to 3 pm.

More than a dozen voyageurs, dressed in authentic 1700’s clothing, will portray, teach, and interact with visitors esplaining the rich history o t he French and Indian Fur Trade era.  Visitors can expect talks and demonstrations that include beeswax candle making, furs on display, rope making, cooking, and much more, according to Voyageur reenactor, Micki Smith, “Everyone is invited to come enjoy music, stories, lectures, and the sharing of this unique culture and history,” Smith added.

Live music from the period will be performed each day.

Voyageurs, Settlers & Natives is a FREE, family-friendly event and will be held on June 11th and 12th from 11 am – 4 pm.  Donations are greatly appreciated.

Self-guided tours of the beautiful Loop-Harrison Mansion will be offered for just $5

The General Store will be open from noon – 4 pm.

Kelly Joy’s Catering will provide food for the event, so come hungry with a few extra bucks in your pocket!
