Voyageurs, Settlers & Natives FREE Weekend at the Sanilac County Historic Museum

June 12, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Visit the Sanilac County Historic Village & Museum for this FREE family-friendly, living history encampment event.  Voyageurs, Settlers, Natives is a free, family-friendly event and will be held on June 12th and 13th from 11 am to 4pm.  Your donations will be gratefully accepted and will support the Sanilac County Historical Society.  The reenactors from Lac Ste. Clair Voyageurs will be back, and new for 2021, the Blue Water Indigenous Alliance will also be participating in the event.

Learn about and experience the rich history connected with the voyageurs, early settlers, and military of the Great Lakes Fur Trade period from 1750-1840.  The Lac Ste Clair Voyageurs, dressed in authentic 1700’s clothing, will portray, teach, and interact with visitors, explaining the rich history of the French and Indian Fur Trade era. “Visitors can expect talks, and demonstrations that include beeswax candle making, furs on display, rope making, cooking, and much more”, according to Micki Smith.

Native Americans from the Blue Water Indigenous Alliance will be creating an Indian Village complete with smoke house, drying racks, and more.  They will also have authentic Indian food for sale, including corn tacos, Indian soup, and Strawberry juice.  Be sure to check out the Native collection in the Houndtown Cabin that has been assembled with the help of Native Americans.

Meet the Settlers at the Banner Cabin that would have been the first permanent white residents of Sanilac County. Explore the historic village; most buildings will be open with docents.  Bring lawn chair and enjoy live music from the period, performed daily by the Pine River Legacy Band John Broadwell, and the String Beans.  Kelly Joy’s Food Tent will be onsite, so come hungry!

Self-guided tours of the beautiful Loop-Harrison Mansion will be offered for just $5, and include the new Vintage Medical Items and Victorian Bathing Habits displays.  The General Store will be open for your shopping pleasure. Lil “H” Carriage Company LLC will be offering horse and wagon rides on the Museum property for just $5 per person.

Dawn Malek, Historical Society Administrator, said that the Museum is excited to host this event for 2021, after having been forced to cancel in 2020 due to the pandemic.  “Please join us for this great living history event.  Be sure to check out our new nature trail while you’re here too!”
